Which Medicare Supplement is Right for You?

Georgia Medicare SupplementsThere are ten supplemental plans to choose from ranging from Plan A though N.  In Indiana, Medicare Supplement Plans C, F, and G are popular as they cover the most common gaps in Medicare.

Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage when coupled with a prescription Part D drug plan.  Plan G is the next best, but does not cover Part B excess charges.

New Plans M and N that were recently introduced in June 2010 offer affordable coverage with some cost sharing for the insured.

Plan N can be purchased on a limited underwriting basis making it a very good option if you would not normally qualify for a new Medicare supplement because of ongoing health concerns.  Almost all applicants will be medically eligible for Plan N with some insurance providers.

IN Medigap Deductibles and Spousal Discounts

A few carriers offer high deductible Plan F.  You must reach $2000 in out of pocket expenses before your supplement would provide any benefits in a given year.  You would have full coverage after the deductible had been reached with Plan F.

Additionally, some carriers will provide premium discounts if you are in open enrollment or applying with a spouse.  United of Omaha and Family Life provide a 7% discount off of monthly premiums for both husband and wife when they are insured together.

Medicare Eligibility, Policy Renewal and Rates

Medicare rules provide for a six month open enrollment window when you turn age 65. During those six months, you are guaranteed eligible and cannot be turned down for a Medicare supplement insurance policy. If you do not purchase coverage during this time period, then you may have to go through underwriting.

In some cases, you can be turned down for an insurance policy if you are in poor health and did not take advantage of your enrollment window.  It is also important to note that the involuntary loss of group employer coverage also creates an open enrollment period of time for those age 65 or above.

All Medicare supplement policies are guaranteed renewable. An insurance provider may not cancel your policy unless you do not pay your premiums on time. Monthly premiums can and will increase year over year. Attained age policies increase with age while issue age increase based on claims. Upon purchase, issue age policies are usually more expensive than attained age plans.

If your Medigap rates have increased on your current policy, it is wise to see if you qualify for a less expensive plan with a competing company.  Those who are in reasonably good health can change supplements (Plan G to Plan G for instance)any time during the year subject to medical underwriting.
