Choosing Medicare Supplement Insurance
The ten modernized plans to choose from are labeled A through N. Plan A provides coverage for only basic benefits while Plan F offer the most comprehensive coverage.
In Pennsylvania, Plans C, F, G and N are very popular when coupled with Part D prescription drug coverage.
Monthly premiums will be least expensive for Plan A and most for Plan F. All others will fall somewhere in between.
Rates will vary depending on your zip code, your age, your gender, if you qualify for a spousal discount, and whether the coverage is attained age or community rated.
New Medicare Plans M and N
Plans N and M are the newest choices for those who need to purchase a Medicare supplement in Pennsylvania. They are both cost sharing plans that will offer lower monthly premiums in exchange for higher out of pocket costs. In this way, they work somewhat like Medicare Advantage plans.
Plan N is offered by some Medigap providers with limited medical underwriting. If you have been turned down in the past because of ongoing health concerns, Plan N may be a suitable option as there are very few medical history questions to be answered and premiums are very affordable.
Medicare Supplements and Open Enrollment
If you are newly enrolled or soon to be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B at age 65, you cannot be denied a Medigap policy due to preexisting conditions. This is a six month window referred to as the open enrollment window and includes the three month before and after your birthday month. There is no medical underwriting during this period of time.
Additionally, if you are involuntarily losing employer sponsored group health insurance due to retirement or separation from service, then you are eligible to purchase a supplemental policy after age 65 without underwriting.
Pennsylvania Medicare Disability Insurance
If you have recently been accepted into Medicare disability, then you will be afforded a six month open enrollment window to purchase supplemental coverage. What makes Pennsylvania unique is that insurance companies cannot charge higher rates for those under age 65.
However, if you miss your six month guaranteed issue window, then medical underwriting will take place and the insurance provider can deny coverage due to poor health. Thus, it is a very good idea to explore all of your options during your six month open enrollment window.
