Which Supplement is Right for You?
Currently, there are ten standardized plans labeled A through J. Plan A will cover basic benefits while Plan J offers the most benefits. The other lettered plans, B through I, offer coverage in the middle. Plan premiums increase as you move from plan A to plan J. With the advent of Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage many carriers no longer offer plans H, I and J. In Missouri, plans F and G are now the most popular supplements when coupled with prescription drug coverage Part D.
Additionally, some insurance providers offer high deductible Medicare supplemental coverage. High deductible plans will provide coverage once certain deductibles are met and are generally less expensive to the consumer. Other carriers offer plans with a certain network of doctors and hospitals. Assuming the insured stays in network, these plans are also less expensive.
Medicare Eligibility and Policy Renewal
If you are enrolled or soon to be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, most seniors cannot be denied a Medigap policy due to their health history. This is known as the open enrollment period. Additionally, if you are losing group health insurance and enrolling in Medicare after age 65, then you are eligible to purchase a supplemental policy. Foreigners need to have lived in the U.S. for at least five years to be eligible for coverage.
All policies are “guaranteed renewable,” which means as long premiums are paid each year, your coverage cannot be canceled by the insurance company. However, your chosen insurance company can raise rates from year to year, which is why healthy consumers occasionally shop for better prices on their Medigap policies.
