Which Supplement is Right for You?

Missouri Medicare SupplementsCurrently, there are ten modernized Medicare supplement insurance plans labeled A through N. Plan A will cover basic benefits while Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage. The other lettered plans, B through M, offer varying amounts of coverage. Plan premiums increase as you move from plan A to plan F.  In Missouri, plans F and G are now the most popular supplements when coupled with prescription drug coverage Part D.

Additionally, some insurance providers offer a high deductible Plan F Medicare supplemental coverage. High deductible Plan F will provide coverage once the deductible ($2000) has been met and is less expensive on a monthly basis.

Other carriers offer “select” plans with a certain network of doctors and hospitals. Assuming the insured stays in network, these plans are also less expensive.

Medicare Eligibility and Open Enrollment

If you are newly enrolled into Medicare Parts A and B at age 65, you cannot be denied a Medigap policy due to your health history and all plans are available for purchase. This is known as the open enrollment period and lasts approximately six months and includes the three months on either side of your birthday month.

Additionally, if you are involuntarily losing group health insurance, then you also are eligible to purchase a supplemental policy without underwriting. Foreigners will need to have lived in the U.S. for at least five years to be eligible for coverage.

Medicare Disability Under Age 65

If you have recently qualified for Medicare Disability, you are also eligible to purchase supplemental coverage during your open enrollment. This is also a six month period of time when insurance companies cannot decline coverage for most plans.

If this window is missed, then underwriting will need to take place and the insured will likely be declined due to poor health. Rates will vary dramatically between insurers for supplemental insurance under age 65, so it is wise to shop around with an agency (like ours) who represents several providers.

MO Policy Anniversary Rule

Each year there is an open enrollment period for those with existing supplemental coverage. The window encompasses 30 days before and after your specific policy anniversary date and allows you to switch to a like plan. For example, if you own a Plan F, then you will be allowed to switch to a new Plan F with another insurance company.

The new insurance company cannot deny coverage nor impose any waiting period for preexisting conditions. You will be required to show minimal proof of your existing coverage, but this is a great way to lower your monthly premiums while maintaining the same coverage and benefits.

We insure all of Missouri including St. Louis, Kansas City, Jefferson City, Columbia, Springfield and beyond.
