Choosing Medicare Supplement Insurance
The ten Medicare supplement plans to choose from in Georgia are labeled A through N. Plan A offers only basic benefits not covered by Medicare while Plan F offers the most benefits. Plans C, F, and G are most popular when coupled with prescription Part D drug coverage. Monthly premium costs will increase from Plans A through F.
The newest plans added in June 2010 are labeled M and N. Both are cost sharing plans designed to compete with Medicare Advantage coverage. Plan N is very popular as it is offered on a limited underwriting basis. If you have been turned down in the past for Medigap insurance due to poor health, then you should consider Plan N as an affordable option.
High Deductible Plan F and Network Coverage
Other supplements offered by insurance carriers include high deductible Plan F. In order for benefits to begin, you would need to reach a $2000 deductible in 2010. Monthly premiums are very affordable for high deductible F plans.
Additionally, some insurance companies offer supplemental coverage with a network of doctors and hospitals to choose from – as oppose to using any doctor or hospital. These are referred to as “select” plans. The advantage of purchasing a high deductible or network driven plan is lower monthly premiums.
Medicare Eligibility and Open Enrollment in GA
If you are currently enrolled or soon to be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, then you are eligible to purchase supplement insurance. This period of time is referred to as open enrollment.
Open enrollment is a seven month window consisting of the three months before your 65th birthday, the month including your 65th birthday, and the three months following. You cannot be denied a supplemental policy because of poor health during open enrollment.
Additionally, you are eligible to purchase a supplement after age 65 if you are involuntarily losing group health insurance from an employer. You will only need proof of credible coverage from your employer to gain acceptance into a Medigap and Part D prescription drug plan.
All Medicare supplement insurance is guaranteed renewable. This mean as long as you pay your premiums on time, your coverage cannot be cancelled. It is important to note that the insurance company underwriting your plan can raise your rates due to age increases and/or claims experience.
If you experience above average rate increase and are in good health, we can help you switch to a more affordable plan with a different provider.
